Check fraud nets prison

Shannon L. Montgomery

More than two years after charges were filed, 37-year-old Shannon L. Montgomery was sentenced Monday to prison in three cases.

Montgomery, from Grabill, is charged in three separate cases with fraud on a financial institution, two counts of corrupt business influence, one count of forgery and one count of battery.

Two of the three cases accuse him of writing bad checks on a closed bank account, as well as working with another person to write bad checks at Kroger stores on another closed bank account. In the battery case, he was charged with knocking out a woman he had been dating.

In February, he pleaded guilty to the fraud charge, one of the corrupt business influence charges, and the battery. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to four years in prison, with two additional years suspended and to be served on probation.

Montgomery must also pay $4,006 in restitution to Kroger.
