Ohio teen dies in Van Wert County crash

An Ohio teenager died Wednesday in a crash on Ohio 637 in Van Wert County, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said tonight.

Robert A. Seffernick, 17, of Mentone, died at the scene, near Elm Sugar Road in Hoaglin Township, the highway patrol's Van Wert post said in a statement.

It said Seffernick was driving north on the state highway at 2:55 p.m. when he lost control on the snow-covered road, slid left of center and was struck by a vehicle driven south by David Simko, 64, of Toledo.

Simko was extricated from his vehicle and flown by Samaritan helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne with serious injuries, the highway patrol said.

It said alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash, and both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

The Paulding County sheriff's office, Grover Hill Volunteer Fire and EMS and Brickner EMS assisted at the scene.
