Spartans get 1st-round win over host Vikings

Caleb Swanigan had 20 points and 18 rebounds Tuesday night to lead Homestead’s boys basketball team to a 59-47 sectional-opening victory in Class 4A against host Huntington North.

Swanigan made 9 of 15 shots and got 14 of his rebounds at the defensive end of the court.

The Spartans pulled away with a 19-12 in the fourth quarter.

For the game, Homestead made 50 percent of its 48 shots, while Huntington North shot 41.2 percent.

Tahj Curry made 6 of 11 shots for 15 points for the Spartans, while teammate Ryan Cotter added nine.

Joe Ault added eight.

Huntington North was paced by Matt Hogan’s 15 points.

Teammate Kyle Platt had 12 points, six rebounds.

Earlier in the day, Swanigan was named an Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week, after averaging 25.5 points and ninerebounds in two games.

That included a career-best 36 points in Friday’s 88-79 loss to North Side.

Class 4A

NORTHROP 41, DEKALB 24: In Kendallville, Jacoby Claypool scored 14 points to lead the Bruins. Enis Becirevic added 10.

DeKalb was paced by Will Chrisman’s eight points.

The game was tied before a 25-12 run by the Bruins in the second and third quarters.

GOSHEN 46, WARSAW 45: In Elkhart, Jack Gingerich had 16 points for Goshen.

Teammate Brady Bechtel added 12 points and five assists.

Jake Mangas had 15 points for Warsaw, which also got 14 from Jordan Stookey.

Goshen held off a late run from Warsaw, which scored 16 of the final 27 points.

Class 3A

NORWELL 79, HERITAGE 43: In Ossian, the Knights were led by David Vogel’s 23 points and Drew Shively’s 17.

COLUMBIA CITY 52, BELLMONT 27: In Ossian, Justin Bachelder had 21 points for the Eagles.

Class A

LAKEWOOD PARK 63, LAKELAND CHRISTIAN 39: In Hamilton, Jared Gerke and Austin Mann scored 16 apiece for Lakewood Park, which scored 18 of the first 23 points.

Jon Harmon had 12 points for Lakeland Christian.
