Check-cashing ploy spurs charges

A man accused of trying to cash a $15,000 check from a woman he didn’t know and telling police he had won a sweepstakes faces an attempted theft charge.

David L. Craycraft, 48, attempted to cash the check Saturday at Checksmart on Lafayette Street, but the employee contacted the check’s owner because of the amount of the check, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The owner, who lives in Texas and has dementia, said she had been forced to write the check by a man who said he was with the FBI, according to a police report. The woman told the Checksmart employee not to cash the check. The worker told Craycraft to come back another day, court records said.

On Monday, Craycraft returned to Checksmart and tried to cash the check. The same employee recognized him and called her manager who called police, according to court documents.

Craycraft first told police he was a friend of the woman’s family, then said he entered an online sweepstakes and was told he would receive a check from the woman. He later told police he did not know the woman.

Craycraft, of the 1500 block of McKinney Avenue, was preliminarily charged Tuesday with attempted theft. He was released on his own recognizance.
