Briefs: Irish’s McBride, McGraw earn ACC honors

Notre Dame guard Kayla McBride was named the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s player of the year, and the Irish’s Muffet McGraw was named the coach of the year by the conference’s coaches Tuesday.

McBride averaged career highs in points (17.5), rebounds (5.5) and assists (3.8).

“I’m honored and extremely grateful, and I want to thank the ACC coaches for this award,” McBride said in a release.

McGraw, who led Notre Dame to a 32-0 record, swept the ACC coach of the year awards after also earning that honor in the media’s vote.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR changing qualifying rule

NASCAR banned drivers from making cool-down laps after their qualifying attempt after drivers expressed safety concerns. Teams will instead be allowed to hook up cooling units to their engines through hood flaps.

BASEBALL

Ex-Tiger McLain in town Saturday

A change was announced for when Denny McLain, the Detroit Tigers’ 1968 American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner, will be in the area to sign autographs. McLain will be in Fort Wayne from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hotel Fort Wayne and in Findlay, Ohio, on Sunday at Country Inn & Suites at the same times.

BASKETBALL

2 area juniors on All-Stars team

Homestead’s Josie Fisher and Canterbury’s Darby Maggard were named to the Junior All-Star North team. The Junior All-Stars will play exhibition games against the Indiana All-Stars as well as the Kentucky Junior All-Stars in June.

Warsaw grad gets spot on AAC team

SMU guard Nic Moore, a former standout at Warsaw, was named to the American Athletic Conference’s all-league team. Moore leads the Mustangs in scoring (13.9 points per game) and assists (4.7).

Guard Thompson commits to Purdue

Point guard P.J. Thompson committed to Purdue, giving the Boilermakers five players in their 2014 recruiting class. The 5-foot-10 Thompson, from Brebeuf Jesuit, is rated a three-star recruit.

Irish add guard to 2014 class

Matt Farrell, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound point guard from Point Pleasant Beach (N.J.) High School, committed Notre Dame, according to reports. Farrell joins forwards Bonzie Colson Jr. and Martin Geben in the 2014 recruiting class.

Fever trades for first-round pick

Indiana traded guard Erin Phillips to Phoenix for forward Lynetta Kizer and a first-round draft pick.

Polly Harrington scored 16 points to lead South Dakota to an 82-71 win over Denver for the Summit League women’s title and the Coyotes’ first trip to the NCAA tournament. … Villanova and Michigan will play in the 2014 Legends Classic with VCU and Oregon at Barclays Center on Nov. 24. … Bowling Green will not renew the contract of seven-year men’s coach Louis Orr.

9 from Region 3 named All-Stars

Bishop Dwenger’s Nathan Niese, Leo’s Logan Glaze, East Noble’s Connor Holcomb, North Side’s Nick Cook, New Haven’s Brandon Stone, Snider’s Donavin O’Day, Carroll’s Tyler Hands, Concordia’s Tony Perigini and Churubusco’s Teegan Brumbaugh were named to the North All-Star squad that will face the South All-Stars in the summer game.

IPFW’s winning streak ends at 5

IPFW fell 3-1 to Ball State in Muncie, snapping the Mastodons’ five-game winning streak. The No. 13 Cardinals (13-5, 5-2 MIVA) won 19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23. Andrew Sellan had 20 kills for the No. 12 Mastodons (13-4, 4-3).
