Proposal for guns on school grounds nears passage

– Legislative leaders say a bill that would allow properly stored guns in school parking lots has support from House and Senate negotiators.

House Speaker Brian Bosma said Wednesday that negotiators had reached an agreement on the contested firearms bill, which originally sought to allow guns on certain areas of school property.

Supporters say the measure would protect parents who unknowingly commit a felony if they bring a gun with them to pick up their children. Opponents say the proposal would create easier access to guns and could lead to greater risk of school shootings.

Bosma says the revised bill would redefine what constitutes school property, leaving out parking lots.

Despite the change in language, he says the bill would have the same effect.

A final vote is expected Thursday.
