4 suspects in jail assault plead guilty

3 to serve time in federal prison; last sentencing in May

In July, four young men from Wells and Jay counties were each indicted in federal court on a single count of retaliating against a witness.

Now, all four – William Sallee, 20, of Ossian; Brandon Betz, 21, of Bluffton; Kameron Kutzli, 22, of Dunkirk; and Tyson Allen, 26, of Bluffton – have pleaded guilty.

On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Theresa Springmann sentenced Betz to a total of 46 months in federal prison and two years on supervised release.

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the group assaulted a fellow inmate at the Wells County Jail. The inmate was perceived as a “snitch,” someone who cooperated with law enforcement.

After the assault, Betz and the others threatened the inmate that he would be attacked again if he continued to cooperate, according to the release.

In January, Kutzli was sentenced to a total of 57 months in federal prison, to be served after sentences on two Wells County cases. After his release from federal prison, Kutzli must serve two years on supervised release, according to court documents.

Sallee was sentenced in January to a total of 46 months in prison, also to be served after he serves sentences on two Wells County cases. He must also spend two years on supervised release after he serves his federal prison sentence, according to court documents.

Allen is scheduled to be sentenced in May.

All four of the men pleaded guilty in September.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
