Golf course undergoes redesign to offer bigger challenge to players

Even on this cold March day, with snow still on the ground and construction equipment nearby, one can see how different the 18th hole at Sycamore Hills Golf Club is compared with Sept. 1, when Trevor Immelman’s 16-foot putt for birdie gave him the championship, and $180,000, at the inaugural Hotel Fitness Championship.

The fairway is narrower. The bunkers are altered in shape and position. The water hazard has been redesigned. The grass 40 feet from the middle of the green is such that a flop shot, a chip-and-run or a putt will allow players to go for the hole to save par.

“The intent was to make it a much more challenging and dramatic finishing hole,” Sycamore Hills general manager Eric Schneider says.

By Memorial Day, Sycamore Hills hopes to have completed the first phase of the most dramatic redesign in the history of the 24-year-old Jack Nicklaus-designed course, consistently rated among the top 100 in the nation.

Fifteen holes will be markedly different for this year’s Hotel Fitness Championship, which runs Aug. 25 to 31. Sycamore Hills will modernize the rest of the holes after the Tour tournament.

Immelman won last year with a four-day total of 20-under 268, edging Patrick Cantlay by one stroke.

“When you get down to it, the course was designed in the late 80s, which was the end of the persimmon driver age,” Schneider says. “The Nicklaus strategy at that point in time, because of the way the ball performed and the way the game was played, was that the fairways were big and there was a preferred angle into the pin from the right or left side of the fairway. Current guys hit it so far and so straight that the hazards were in the wrong places. And the fairways were too wide for the modern game.”

Under the guidance of the Nicklaus Designs, Sycamore Hills eliminated 10 acres of fairway, taking landing areas that were more than 40 feet wide down to 22 to 28 feet wide, and put hazards where pros will have to contend with them.

“In the end, they’re artists,” head professional Tim Frazier says of the course designers, adding that a byproduct is Sycamore Hills is becoming an easier course for those with high handicaps.

“(The 18th) hole here is a perfect example. The bunkers are so far away from the tee that it’s tough for the skilled golfer because it really pinches in where they would want to land the ball. But for the less-skilled golfer, they won’t hit it that far. Their landing area is wider. And there used to be a waterway across there, … and they won’t have to lay up now.”

Sycamore Hills has played host for five national championships for the United States Golf Association and the PGA of America. The Hotel Fitness Championship is the first of four legs within the Tour’s Finals, which determine PGA Tour cards for the following season.

The redesign was sparked by a change in ownership last year at Sycamore Hills and by feedback from PGA Tour officials. When pros first arrived to try out the course last year, Schneider says, “The first thing out of their mouths was, ‘Those fairways are wide. Are you going to narrow them up?’ ”

Sycamore Hills has made changes throughout its history, including a tree-planting program that helped shield homes from the course. More recently, because of ash borer disease and other factors, about 165 trees have been removed.

But changes to courses are commonplace at all levels for myriad reasons, such as difficulty, cosmetics and finances.

At local Deer Track Golf Course, which opened in 1989, nine holes were removed last year to make way for a housing development.

Coyote Creek Golf Club renovated its facilities recently, demolishing the old clubhouse, creating a new pro shop, lounge and banquet facilities, and adding to the practice facilities.

The changes at Sycamore Hills were made with the input of those running the Hotel Fitness Championship.

“They are more worried about consistency,” says John Thompson, the golf course superintendent at Sycamore Hills. “They want everything the same, like with the bunkers.”

That hasn’t been easy, though, because beginning last fall, the weather kept construction workers from doing as much as Sycamore Hills had hoped.

But when the Hotel Fitness Championship rolls around, and players are coming down the 18th hole with visions of a championship trophy, things will be more difficult.

“You want a challenging finishing hole,” Schneider says. “It sets up for more drama if there’s trouble off the tee and on the second shots. You could have a 2-to-3 shot swing, really.”
