New Haven woman, boys rescued from high water

Indiana conservation officers rescued a New Haven woman and two boys Wednesday night, according to a statement issued Wednesday.

About 8 p.m., Melissa Shaffer, 52, was driving on Grandview Road in Brown County when her Ford Explorer stalled in high water, conservation officers said. Her 12-year-old son and his 11-year-old friend were with her.

Officers said the boys were able to climb out to the roof through the sunroof, but Shaffer was unable to get out. When crews first arrived, the water was up to the SUV’s headlights.

Conservation Officer Joe Tenbarge put on a dry suit and a personal flotation device and then used a safety rope to wade out to the stranded SUV. Conservation officers said he carried the boys to safety and then helped Shaffer through the water and onto dry land.

By the time they were all out, conservation officers said, the water was covering the Explorer’s hood.
