Man dies after fight on south side

A fight late Saturday afternoon on Fort Wayne's south side ended with one man taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Police responded about 5:15 p.m. to a home in the 2000 block of Gladstone Drive and found an unresponsive man in the home, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.

The man was in critical condition when medics took him to a local hospital, police said.

A fight between the victim and another man occurred before police were called, but police did not know Saturday night why the two fought.

What role the fight played in the man's death was also unknown Saturday night, according to Chris Felton, public information officer for the FWPD.

Police did detain a person of interest at the scene and questioned him about the fight, but he did not face any criminal charges as of late Saturday, police said.

A statement from police about the death investigation also said it was too early to say if charges would be filed.

Police also questioned witnesses to the fight.

Detectives are working on finding a relationship between those involved and the victim, as well as what led to the fight and any other motives.

Police stressed gang activity is not suspected in the death.

The home where the man was found is in a subdivision near the east end of Gladstone Drive, a side street off South Anthony Boulevard about half way between East Paulding and Tillman roads.

Yellow police tape was tied across the front door to the home while investigators collected and photographed evidence.

A couple of neighbors briefly peaked out at the police activity on their street but did not linger.

If ruled a homicide, it would be the second one of the year in Allen County.

The first homicide of the year occurred Jan. 19 when Damian J. Miller II, 32, of Fort Wayne was shot dead outside the Dupont Bar and Grill.
