Cadet honored; coach steps down

– While Concordia senior D.J. McCall was making the Indiana All-Star team, his coach was telling his team that he was stepping down as coach after seven seasons Thursday.

McCall was the lone area player to make the team, which was announced by the sponsoring Indianapolis Star also on Thursday. Marion’s James Blackmon Jr., a former Bishop Luers standout, also made the 13-player squad.

Coach Josh Eggold was 87-70 at Concordia, including the 2013 Class 3A state runner-up finish. He said in a phone interview that he was resigning to spend more time with his family, which includes two young children.

“Based on the time it takes with basketball, I thought with my family it was better to step away from coaching for a few years,” Eggold said. “It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make.”

Also on the Indiana All-Star team are Indianapolis Tech teammates Trey Lyles and Jeremie Tyler; Bryant McIntosh and Sean Sellers of Greensburg; Trevon Bluiett of Indianapolis Park Tudor; Grant Evans of Wapahani; Zach McRoberts of Carmel; Mack Mercer of Plymouth; Tayler Persons of Kokomo; P.J. Thompson of Indianapolis Brebeuf; and Tyler Wideman of Lake Central.

The Indiana All-Stars will play against their Kentucky counterparts twice – June 13 in Lexington, Ky., and June 14 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
