Police find sex offender with public's help

The Steuben County Sheriff's Office put out a notice Monday seeking information about a rural Fremont man it believes had failed to register as a sex offender.

On Tuesday afternoon, Corey Alan Witsman, 26, was found at a residence near Barton Lake in northern Steuben County by the sheriff's department and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Witsman is on probation after being convicted of felony sexual misconduct with a minor last year, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

On Tuesday, he was booked into the Steuben County Jail on one count of probation violation and two counts of class D felony failure to register as a sex or violent offender. Witsman was being held without bond pending an initial court appearance.

The sheriff's office said it would like to thank all those who provided tips and information.
