United Way projects $4.7 million campaign total

Statement as issued Thursday by United Way of Allen County:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – United Way of Allen County president and CEO Todd Stephenson and campaign chair Chris Sosebee announced community campaign results at a celebration breakfast today at the Grand Wayne Center. This year’s Community Campaign total is projected at nearly $4.7 million.

“We are pleased with the outcome of the campaign because of all the great work that it will help accomplish in our community,” said Sosebee. “This $4.7 million allows our 34 partner agencies to continue to run outstanding programs that make a difference in the lives of so many Allen County residents and it allows United Way to further their work in their education initiatives and the work being done by the 2-1-1 Service Center, which is supported by Lutheran Health Network.”

United Way supports the four community building blocks for a better quality of life — education, income, health and basic needs. Donations made to United Way’s Community Campaign support programs at 34 agency partners, United Way’s education initiatives like Let’s Talk and Kindergarten Countdown as well as basic needs assistance through the 2-1-1 Service Center. United Way knows that when individuals get the education they need they are able to obtain stable employment, provide a safe home for their families, cover their basic needs and maintain a healthy life.

More than 250 workplace campaigns and 12,000 donors contributed to United Way’s annual Community Campaign. Additionally, the Robert Goldstine Foundation again provided a grant, which matched net new or increased leadership level giving ($1,000 or more). This year, the grant is projected to bring in an additional $265,000 to the Community Campaign.

Community Campaign funds are raised through workplace campaigns, corporate gifts, individual donations and gifts from foundations and trusts. Not all grants and restricted gifts are counted in the final total. Some workplace campaigns are still running and individuals are still making contributions; those interested in making a gift that qualifies for the Goldstine match are still able to do so. The community campaign total of nearly $4.7 million is based on projections for the remaining campaigns and gifts and includes the Robert Goldstine Foundation matching grant.

Campaign Awards

Stephenson and Sosebee also announced that Steel Dynamics, Inc. earned United Way of Allen County’s top workplace campaign honor, the Spirit of Giving award. For Allen County, Steel Dynamics and subsidiaries saw more than a 28 percent increase in their campaign this year as well as an increase in their leadership level donors. New Millennium, one of their subsidiaries also ran a campaign for the first time this year and Omnisource also increased their campaign this year. Along with all of their financial support, Steel Dynamics has also been involved with Day of Caring since 2009.

“Companies like Steel Dynamics, Inc. understand that it takes all of us–working together– to make Allen County and Northeast Indiana a better place to live and work,” said Stephenson. “They understand what it means to LIVE UNITED”

Several other awards were announced during the celebration. The Cornerstone awards are given to companies that have substantial employee participation, follow campaign best practices and experience growth in their campaign. The Pillar of Support awards are earned by companies that have strong employee participation, have campaign growth and also follow best practices. The winners are as follows:
