TinCaps struggle at plate in loss to West Michigan

The TinCaps concluded a 2-5 road trip with a 2-1 loss at West Michigan on Sunday that was marred by struggles at the plate.

The Whitecaps (12-11) took two out of three in the series at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich.

Kevin Ziomek (1-2) was too much to handle, throwing eight shutout innings with six strikeouts. The TinCaps get just three hits off of him.

The TinCaps (9-13) scored in the ninth inning.

With two outs, Fernando Perez doubled to score Dustin Peterson, who had walked.

A wild pitch advanced pinch-runner Franchy Cordero to third.

TinCaps manager Michael Collins sent in Dane Phillips as a pinch-hitter for Ryan Miller. Phillips grounded to second against Montreal Robertson to end it.

Adrian De Horta (0-1) went five innings and gave up both runs in the second – one on a wild pitch, the other on an RBI groundout by Bennett Pickar.

The first four hitters in the Fort Wayne order went 0 for 15 with a walk.

The TinCaps open a four-game series with Great Lakes at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Parkview Field. Right-hander Bryan Verbitsky is scheduled to start in his TinCaps debut. The Loons are set to counter with righty James Campbell.
