    Darby Maggard had 34 points and 12 assists and Katherine Smith had 16 points and 10 rebounds in Canterbury’s 78-65 girls basketball win over Snider at the Panthers’ Kilmer Classic on Saturday.
  • Luers’ bid for state ends on late kick
    Top-ranked Andrean beat No. 3 Bishop Luers 17-15 Saturday in a 3A semistate at Luersfield as the reigning state champion 59ers earned a trip to the Class 3A state finals.
  • Snider gets sliced up
    A Snider team that had gotten to the Class 5A semistate by forcing its opponents into untimely mistakes was eliminated Friday largely thanks to its own errors.

Busco soars at Turtle Town track meet

Churubusco’s Danielle Pippenger placed first in the small schools (black) section of the 100-meter hurdles (16.95 seconds), 300-meter hurdles (49.78), high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) and long jump (16-6) at Busco’s Turtle Town Relays.

Teammate Katie Monk finished first in the shot put (38-6.5) and discus (113-10). The Eagles finished first in the team results with 141 points.

Warsaw finished first in the large schools (gold) team standings with 141.5 points.

Northop girls scored 123 points to take the top spot at Penn’s Lady Kingsmen Invitational. The Bruins beat the host, who finished second with 102.5 points.

Wayne finished third with 68, Huntington North with 48, Homestead fifth (45), Carroll seventh (41) and South Side 11th (17).


CHURUBUSCO 16-8, MANCHESTER 0-6: At Manchester, Eagles pitcher Devin Peters pitched a no-hit, five-inning game against the Squires. The Eagles scored seven runs in the fifth in the 16-0 victory.

Hayden Kilgore led Busco’s offense in the 8-6 win going 2 for 3 at bat and scoring three runs.

LEO 6-5, CANTERBURY 4-8: At Leo, Jordan Hissong scored two runs, had an RBI and stole a base to lead the Lions over the Cavaliers in game one.

In game two, Aaron Scott went 2 for 4 at bat, hit a home run and had three RBI to lead the Cavaliers.


Fremont was the top-placing local team at the South Adams Invitational at Golf Course of the Limberlost. South Adam’s McCallister Clouser placed second individually as the highest-placing local golfer.

Shenandoah won the team event with 352 and Ryan Farmer shot a 74 to take the top spot individually.


CARROLL 2, CATHEDRAL 1: At the Carmel Invitational, the Chargers scored two runs in the sixth to secure a victory in their first game of the invite.

Katy Guebard allowed seven hits and struck out two.

CARROLL 6, MCCUTCHEON 2: At Carmel, Emily Catanzarite went 3 for 3 at bat and scored two runs to lead the offense for the Chargers.

Guebard pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowed no hits and struck out four.

FREMONT 9-4, BETHANY CHRISTIAN 4-3: At Bethany Christian, Shae Rhonenhouse went 4 for 4 at bat, scored two runs, and had two RBI. Rebecca Bennett allowed seven hits and struck out nine in game one.

In game two, Rhonenhouse and Kaitlin Thatcher went 2 for 3 at bat, and each scored one run and had one RBI to lead the Eagles.

BISHOP DWENGER 5, ANGOLA 2: At Bishop Dwenger, Kristina Burkhardt hit her first career home run to give the Saints the lead in the third.

Jordan Schneider walked one and struck out seven in the win.
