Wayne pitcher pushes limits

Senior right-hander Nick Huyck has been Wayne’s ace all season, but coach Eric Sherrill wasn’t sure about going past the usual seven innings.

In most of his starts this year, Huyck has gone the distance, but the Generals had to go nine innings to beat Snider 4-3 on Tuesday.

“Nick going eight innings and pushed me past the spot where I feel comfortable with putting him back out there, but he is a senior, and he wanted to go out there for the (eighth) inning,” Sherrill said. “This is probably the closest game he has pitched, this and North Side. We count on him and the team gets up for him.”

Huyck (4-0) walked nine batters and gave up five hits in eight innings.

“There were a couple of innings where we kind of gave it to them,” Sherrill said of Huyck. “Against teams like Snider, you can’t give them free bases. Defensively when we let us down, we kind of picked him up. Many times we did, and that’s what made us go nine innings, fortunately.”

Sherrill put in Matt McCullough, who got the win after a scoreless ninth.
