FORT WAYNE – The local Better Business Bureau office is launching its second CEO search in less than one year.
Greg Smitley, president and CEO, has resigned effective June 9 to accept a position with Huntington University as treasurer and vice president of finance, officials announced Tuesday.
Marjorie Stephens, marketplace services director, has been named interim president and CEO. She has served at the Better Business Bureau Serving Northern Indiana for 10 years.
In June, the Better Business Bureau named Smitley, a Huntington University graduate, to succeed longtime leader Mike Coil.
Coil, who led the nonprofit for 12 years, retired in July, the same month he turned 65.
During his 10 months in the job, Smitley helped revamp the selection process for the Better Business Bureau's annual Torch Awards, which honor ethics and integrity. After struggling to generate nominations in previous years, the 3,400-member organization instead solicited suggestions from past Torch Award winners and its board of directors.
“Even though I've been at the BBB a relatively short period of time, I cherish the relationships I've either built or strengthened over the past year, am optimistic about the positive direction of our local organization, and am proud and honored to have served with such a fine and dedicated group of people,” Smitley said in a statement.
Kevin Hunter, Better Business Bureau chairman and president of Windows, Doors & More, will lead the search for Smitley's replacement.
“We appreciate Greg's efforts and energy in propelling the BBB forward” by promoting the organization, he said in a statement.
