Car avoids deer, hits pickup head-on

A car swerving to avoid a deer before dawn Thursday on Indiana 1 went left of center into the path of a pickup truck, according to a statement issued by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.

It said Zachari W. Hall, 19 of Antwerp, Ohio, was driving north about 5:15 a.m. in the 3700 block when his 1999 Pontiac Grand Am crossed the center line as the 2007 Ford F-150 crested a hill coming from the south.

The pickup rolled over and came to rest on the passenger side. The driver, Randy A. Kaiser, 25, of Butler, had back and sternum injuries, the sheriff’s department said. He was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital.

Hall was taken to a hospital in northwest Ohio.

A condition was not available for either driver later in the morning.
