Lugar endorses Seybold

Former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar has weighed in on the contested Republican race for State Treasurer, throwing his support behind Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold.

"It is a privilege to endorse Mayor Wayne Seybold to become the next Treasurer of the State of Indiana. Wayne Seybold has demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities...and this leadership has been recognized by his election as President of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, as President of the Indiana Mayor's Association, and as a member of the Community and Economic Development Committee of the National League of Cities," Lugar said.

In 2011, Seybold was elected to his third term as mayor.

"Wayne Seybold will bring new strengths to state government through his election as Treasurer of the State of Indiana, and I am most hopeful that Hoosiers will give him an overwhelming mandate to serve," Lugar said.

Seybold is in a three-way battle for the Republican nomination for state treasurer, which will be decided at the GOP State Convention in Fort Wayne next month.

Seybold said Lugar's is "one of the most special endorsements of my candidacy for State Treasurer," noting Lugar is a "man whose class, record of accomplishment and impact on humanity through public life is a model to emulate for any elected official. It is for me."

Others running are Richmond financial adviser Don Bates and Kelly Mitchell, who currently works in the office and has received the endorsement of current State Treasurer Richard Mourdock.
