South Bend puts off smoking ban action

A proposal to ban smoking inside bars in South Bend has been put on hold by the city council for 60 days after opponents argued it would be unfair to those businesses.

Tavern owner Gary Weese said it would cost him business because customers could easily go to bars outside the city limits, where smoking would be allowed.

Councilman Gavin Ferlic, a sponsor of the tougher smoking ban, argued that it's aimed at making the city of 100,000 people a healthier place to work.
