OmniSource worker tied to copper thefts

A nearly 20-year employee of a scrap-metal business was charged Thursday with what police said was his role in the theft of thousands of pounds of copper worth more than $12,000.

When police arrived May 9 at an OmniSource plant in Fort Wayne on a theft report, they interviewed Timothy L. Hardy Sr., 42, of the 2500 block of Manford Street, who was accused by OmniSource of taking the copper, according to a report.

Police said Hardy admitted he stole about 4,000 pounds of copper from the plant and had it in his SUV.

Investigators found the SUV, weighed down considerably by the copper in the back of it.

The total weight stolen was 4,148 pounds, valued at $12,692, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Hardy was arrested and released on his own recognizance.

He told police he’d worked at OmniSource for 19 years.
