TinCaps pay for late error against Silver Hawks

The TinCaps were matching South Bend almost pitch for pitch and hit for hit until a costly mistake opened the door for the Silver Hawks.

South Bend scored twice in the eighth after Dustin Peterson’s two-base error and squeezed out a 5-3 win Friday at Four Winds Field in South Bend.

The third baseman’s error, his 15th, came with none out and was followed by Steve McQuail’s tiebreaking RBI single.

Fort Wayne (17-23) dropped its second straight in the four-game series and is 1-4 against the Silver Hawks.

South Bend (23-17) got six innings from Braden Shipley, who allowed three runs on five hits.

TinCaps starter Adrian De Horta was almost as effective, giving up three runs on five hits in five innings.

Fort Wayne’s Jake Bauers had a two-run triple in the fourth and scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1.

The Silver Hawks tied it in their next chance, getting a sacrifice fly from Ryan Gebhardt and an RBI single by Breland Almadova.

Eric Yardley (0-1) had retired all six batters he faced before failing to work around Peterson’s error.

TinCaps right-hander Erik Cabrera (0-2) makes his second start today and is to be opposed by righty Blake Perry (1-2).
