Reports: Notre Dame continues to pay Weis

The price tag for Notre Dame to get rid of former football coach Charlie Weis could exceed $18 million, according to reports.

The university paid Weis $2,054,744 during the 2012 calendar year, according to Notre Dame’s federal tax return that cover July 2012 through June 2013 obtained by ESPN and USA Today.

Weis, who is the head coach at Kansas, was fired in 2009 after five seasons with Notre Dame. The university paid an initial sum of $6,638, 403 when Weis was let go, and he has received a total of $12,802,635 so far from Notre Dame.

This was the third straight payment of $2,054,744 Weis received from Notre Dame, and he is scheduled to collect “additional annual payments” through 2015. If the next three payments are equal to the last three, Weis could receive $18,966,867 from Notre Dame.

Coach Brian Kelly, who led the Irish to the BCS championship game in the 2012 season, received $1,457,284 from Notre Dame, according to ESPN. Kelly’s base salary was $698,140 and he received “bonus and incentive compensation” of $607,200.

The tax forms likely do not list Kelly’s total earnings during the time period as the school noted that “the current head football coach is permitted to receive compensation from external sources with prior written approval from the University,” according to ESPN.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick earned $1,143,052 from Notre Dame, and former defensive coordinator Bob Diaco was paid $672,824. Diaco left the Irish after this past season to become the head coach at Connecticut.

Men’s basketball coach Mike Brey was paid $1,526,488. He received $806,488 in salary, bonuses, “other reportable compensation,” retirement, and deferred money and non-tax benefits, and he got an additional $720,000 from Play by Play sports, which is now known as Notre Dame Sports Properties.
