College roundup: Loss ends IPFW baseball season

– IPFW’s baseball season ended with a 6-3 loss Friday to South Dakota State in Sioux Falls, S.D., in the Summit League championships.

The Mastodons (19-36) got a 3-for-3 game from Evan VanSumeren, who scored two runs.

They took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Shane Trevino’s single scored Kristian Gayday, but it was short-lived.

IPFW pitcher Nate White was yanked with no outs in the second inning, after giving up five runs on three hits, walking five and striking out one. Dane Davis stepped in for 6 2/3 innings of one-run, three-hit work.

The Jackrabbits (28-28) were paced by Scott Splett, who was 2 for 4 with one run and two RBI.

INDIANA 5, MICHIGAN 0: Late Thursday in Omaha, Neb., Christian Morris allowed one hit in seven innings for the No. 8 Hoosiers in the Big Ten tournament. Top-seeded IU plays Michigan State today.


EAST TEXAS BAPTIST 11, TRINE 3: In Tyler, Texas, the Thunder’s season came to an end at the Division III championships.

Following a Rachel Harris home run in the fifth, Amy Newell homered in her first at-bat of the season, after battling through injury.

The Thunder (43-6) won its first regional and super regional, producing an All-American (Carly Searles) and six All-Region picks.
