60 years in attempt to kill wife, her daughter

FORT WAYNE -- Stephen D. Walker was sentenced to 30 years each on two counts of attempted murder, to be served one after the other for a total of 60 years.

Stephen D. Walker, 35, of the 8100 block of North Clinton Street, last month pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in connection with the October shooting of his wife and her adult daughter.

In exchange for his guilty plea, eight additional charges were dismissed Tuesday, including two counts of battery, one count of aggravated battery and being a habitual offender.

Walker was arrested a few days after the shootings, after he shot the two women in the Dupont Estates trailer park. According to court documents, Walker and his wife got into an argument and as it continued, Walker began to drink more and more rum. When she declined to sit with him on the couch, he became increasingly agitated and went into the bedroom, retrieving a gun from a safe.

Walker, a registered sex offender, shot his wife at close range and then turned the gun on her daughter. The bullet struck her in the finger after being deflected by a cellphone she held up between her and the gun, according to court documents.

When he was arrested, Walker was wearing a blue motorcycle helmet inside his car. He fled from police and was arrested after a brief chase in the parking lot of the Carmike 20 movie theater on Dupont Road.
