Notre Dame's Smith named Phil Steele 2nd-team All-American

Notre Dame linebacker and former Bishop Luers star Jaylon Smith was named a Phil Steele preseason second-team All-American.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder started all 13 games last season and was the first freshman linebacker to start a season opener for Notre Dame since Kory Minor in 1995.

He was the Irish’s third-leading tackler last season with 67, which is the third mot in school history by a freshman. He was second on the team in tackles for loss with 6 ½, and he forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and had an interception.

Notre Dame tight end Ben Koyack was named to Steele’s third team, and cornerback KeiVarae Russell was a fourth-team selection.
