Pond crash victim identified

A Fort Wayne man has been identified as the victim of a crash into a northwest Allen County pond early Thursday.

Elijah M. Tanner, 32, was pronounced dead at Parkview Regional Medical Center shortly after his arrival, the Allen County coroner's office said in a statement.

An autopsy Thursday afternoon did not determine the cause or manner of Tanner's death, the statement said.

The county sheriff's department has said the victim was driving a van south on Lima Road before losing control for an unknown reason and crossing into northbound traffic.

Police said the van left the road and wound up about 50 feet into a pond in the 14300 block of Lima Road.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department's dive team and the Huntertown Fire Department worked to free the driver.

The crash remains under investigation by county police and the coroner's office.
