Police: IRS doesn't collect on phone

The Internal Revenue Service doesn't collect back taxes on the phone, and laws exist to prohibit such threats, Indiana State Police and the Better Business Bureau in Northern Indiana said today.

According to the BBB, consumers are receiving menacing calls from people saying they are with the IRS, threatening arrest and jail time if immediate payment isn't made, state police at Fort Wayne said in a statement.

If someone actually owed money in back taxes, the IRS would send out notification by mail, the statement said.
