Lake's private muskie stocking to continue

A privately funded fish-stocking program at Loon Lake in Whitley County will be allowed to continue based on support from local property owners, the Department of Natural Resources said today.

A group called the Loon Lake Fish Maintenance Program has proposed to stock 400 muskies and 1,500 walleye in the lake this fall, the DNR's Division of Fish & Wildlife said in a statement.

The DNR said today it would approve the permit.

"We don't expect any negative impacts as a result of this stocking," said Jeremy Price, DNR regional fisheries supervisor, in the statement. "Loon Lake has plenty of forage, and the numbers proposed for each species are well below our standard stocking rates."

The DNR stocks muskies in six northern Indiana lakes and walleye in 14 lakes, the statement said.
