Even if someone owed money to the IRS, they would not get phone calls that threaten arrests and jail time – despite what calls that some Hoosiers have recently received might say.
The Indiana State Police and Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana want residents to know these calls are not legitimate and certainly not from the IRS.
The Better Business Bureau said the calls are intimidating and the person on the line claims to be with the IRS.
The reason given for the calls is collection of back taxes, and they include threats of arrest and jail time if the caller does not receive immediate payment.
The IRS does not use this approach, and law prohibits such threats, the Better Business Bureau and state police said.
Legitimate IRS notifications arrive in the mail, they said.
Anyone who received a call or has further questions can call the IRS at 800-829-1049.
