TinCaps Notebook: Bauers surprised by ejection

FORT WAYNE – Jake Bauers watched a breaking ball hook around the plate and heard plate umpire Marc Lindsey call the borderline pitch a third strike.

As Bauers turned to leave the batter’s box, the TinCaps slugger voiced his contrary opinion and was ejected in the fifth inning of Sunday’s 12-3 loss to Bowling Green.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting it,” Bauers said. “Usually you say something to the guy, and they don’t even flinch at it. I guess I caught him on a bad day.”

TinCaps manager Michael Collins had a face-to-face chat with Lindsey, though both men remained entirely calm.

“He (Bauers) said a couple choice things that umpires don’t want to hear,” Collins said. “I understand this is an emotional game. Whether he’s frustrated at himself or the umpire, it came to a head right there. We’ll definitely talk about it and move past it. It’s a learning experience. I’m not going to get mad at him.”

WEICKEL OFF: TinCaps right-hander Walker Weickel, so good in his last three starts, gave up a hit to 11 of the 21 batters he faced.

“It was a fairly slow tempo,” Collins said. “He was a little inconsistent with his pitches, fell behind. Some of his misses were misses by quite a bit. Their hitters were in position to attack and took advantage.”

NO FUN-DAY: The TinCaps are 1-7 in games played on Sundays.
