High school state softball: South Spencer takes 2A crown

South Spencer won its first state title by defeating Southmont 1-0 in the Class 2A championship game at Ben Davis.

Hannah Epperson drove in the winning in the seventh for South Spencer (27-5) bringing home Chandra Schroeder, who had hit a double.

Kaylea Horn pitched all seven innings for South Spencer, giving up two hits and striking out 11.

McKenzie Jordan gave up six hits and struck out eight for Southmont (23-9).

South Spencer had two previous appearances in the final in 1999 and 2008.

Class A

NORTH MIAMI 3, NORTH DAVIESS 1: North Miami won its first state championship in school history as neither team scored an earned run.

North Daviess (18-12) scored first in the bottom of the second, which North Miami (29-4) evened in the sixth.

Josie Wood scored from first in the 10th off a fielding error by a hit from Jose Knauff. Knauff then scored from an RBI single from Savannah Davis so secure the title.

Josie Wood gave up one run on three hits for North Miami. Tailon Graber gave up three runs on five hits for North Daviess.

Class 4A

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 6, HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN 2: Bloomington South (21-8) scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead and earn its first state title.

Hamilton Southeastern (23-11) scored another run in the fifth to which Bloomington South responded with two more and further secured the title with one run in the sixth.

Mena Fulton went 1 for 1, scored two runs and had and RBI, and Addie Beham went 1 for 3 and had 3 RBI to lead Bloomington South.

Olivia White (18-4) pitched all seven innings giving up eight hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out eight.

Savanna Copeland gave up six runs on five hits in five innings for Hamilton Southeastern, and Maggie Armstrong gave up one hit.
