Woman punched child twice, police say

A Fort Wayne woman was charged Wednesday with felony battery, accused of punching a 12-year-old girl in the face twice during a tirade in front of the girl's home.

When police were called about 10 p.m. June 19 to a report of the child being struck, they found Angelicia L. Merriweather, 29, pacing in the street and carrying a shovel, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Merriweather, of the 1000 block of North Coliseum Boulevard, was yelling about being jumped and wanting an attorney called and would not calm down enough to speak to police, the investigating officer wrote in the affidavit.

Police spoke with the person who made the report who told officers she and her two children were in their front yard when Merriweather walked by and yelled at them.

Merriweather then charged at the woman's son and threw things at him, according to the affidavit.

Merriweather was told to leave, and as she walked away, punched the woman's 12-year-old daughter in the face twice, the report said.

Merriweather was being held Wednesday evening in lieu of $2,500 bail.
