FORT WAYNE – As the rain subsided Saturday afternoon, a white cloth clung to a body lying in the street.
The man under the cloth was Fort Wayne's latest victim of gun violence in Fort Wayne, apparently pushed from a car and left for dead.
Police were already on their way about 1:45 p.m. to 3205 S. Anthony Blvd. on a report of a shooting victim moments before they got the report of the man lying in the street on Robinwood Drive, said John Chambers, Fort Wayne police spokesman.
When police arrived at Robinwood, they found a man dead from gunshots, he said.
The body was on the west side of the street near the curb, several yards south of the intersection with Oxford Street.
The man found shot on South Anthony Boulevard was taken to a hospital in fair condition, Chambers said.
Despite the closeness in location and near-identical report times, he said it was too early to say whether the shootings were connected.
Chambers said nearby residents on Robinwood did not report hearing any shots fired in the area.
A dark car was seen leaving the area, police and witnesses said.
For one nearby resident, the fatal shooting was the last straw. She's packing and looking for a new place to live.
The woman, who asked that she not be identified, has lived there only since September, but a dead body dumped on the street in front of her house is enough motivation to leave.
“I can't take it … I'm cutting my lease,” she said.
She was in her house Saturday afternoon and went to check outside when she heard a woman scream, “He's dead!”
“It was very obvious that he was,” she said.
Visibly upset by the gruesome discovery, and with yellow crime scene tape tied to a downspout of her house, the woman pointed to several nearby locations where she's either heard gunshots or shootings have occurred.
She said the nearby violence makes her fearful to have her grandchildren visit or sit on her porch.
Finding a shell casing in a flower pot didn't help matters.
