2 charged with passing bad checks

Two Fort Wayne women were charged Wednesday with passing more than $18,000 in bad checks during the span of a year.

Jatoya Y. Thomas, 28, of the 200 block of Pursley Drive, and Brea S. Ware, 24, of the 4700 block of Lafayette Esplanade, are accused of working with at least one other person in writing hundreds of bad checks, sometimes with fraudulent names on fake or closed accounts, at Kroger stores in the area, according to probable cause affidavits.

In some cases, Thomas or Ware attempted to return the items they bought with the bad checks, the reports said.

By the end of the investigation, police tracked 300 bad checks written to Kroger between January 2013 and January 2014 totaling $18,829, the affidavits said.

Warrants were issued for their arrests, but neither was in custody Wednesday evening.
