Early-morning fire destroys house

FORT WAYNE – A house southeast of downtown was badly damaged by fire early Sunday.

Firefighters were called to 3505 S. Monroe St. at 3:39 a.m. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from three sides of the building, according to a statement issued by the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

A search found no occupants and no injuries were reported, the statement said.

The fire compromised the integrity of the two-story building.

The fire department said crews will remain at the site until mid-morning.
