Ritz supporters launch online #‎LetRitzWork petition

The College Democrats of Indiana have started a petition telling Gov. Mike Pence to get out of Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz's way.

The original goal was to get at least 500 signatures by Aug. 25. But after only four days the group has more than 1,400 signatures.

The #‎LetRitzWork campaign has already been picked up by State Impact Indiana and the Indianapolis Star, as well as supported by the Indiana AFT and several office holders.

This story is one that focuses on both youth engagement in educational policy as well as state level political discussion. The news of the signatures came just after State School Board Member Gordon Hendry -- a Democrat -- chastised Ritz in an editorial sent to newspapers around the state. "I don’t know why the Superintendent insists on creating conflict where rational debate should instead exist. I have reached out to her on multiple occasions to sit down and talk through our differences," Hendry said. "I hope she will change her mind and decide to work with us to promote an agenda of ideas instead of more empty, anti-everything rhetoric. The Superintendent was elected, but not as an education czar." Ritz continues to battle with the State Board of Education, which has a majority of Republicans, and the Center for Education and Career Innovation -- a quasi education agency created via executive order by Pence that is representing the board.
