Trial starts in break-in, theft, hit-and-run

Accused of trying to break into a house, then stealing a car and running over its owner, a 30-year-old man is on trial this week in Allen Superior Court.

Jeremy Ensch, of the 1000 block of Coliseum Boulevard North, is charged with battery with a deadly weapon or resulting in serious bodily injury, residential entry, auto theft, receiving stolen auto parts and criminal recklessness – all felonies.

He also faces two misdemeanors – failure to return to the scene of an accident resulting in injury and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in damage to another vehicle.

Police believe Ensch tried to break into a home in June 2013. When the resident saw him and called 911, he walked away as the resident's father arrived. She then saw Ensch drive away in their 1993 Toyota, court records said.

When the car's owner confronted Ensch in the road, he sped up and struck him, throwing him onto the windshield and over the top of the car, court documents said.

Ensch was arrested after he crashed the car at Yohne and Smith roads.

The trial is expected to continue through today.
