SUV strikes bike; child badly injured

A child riding a bicycle was left in critical condition Saturday evening after being hit by a sport utility vehicle.

The child was struck about 6:40 p.m. at the intersection of St. Joseph Boulevard and Tennessee Avenue, Fort Wayne police said.

Emergency responders arrived and found the child unresponsive in the street.

Witnesses told police the child, whose age or gender was not provided, was riding east on Tennessee Avenue and did not stop at a red light at St. Joseph Boulevard, police said.

The child was taken in critical condition to a hospital.

This is at least the third time this month when a child on a bicycle was hit by a car in northeast Indiana, with the most recent previous crash claiming the life of a 10-year-old boy in Kosciusko County when he did not stop at a stop sign.

A few weeks before that, a young girl was hit by a car in Fort Wayne after she did not stop at a stop sign and rode into the path of oncoming traffic.

She survived that crash.
