Strangers, family grieve slain teen

– Strangers joined family and friends Friday at the funeral of a 14-year-old girl found slain along a nature trail in northern Macomb County.

Some mourners wore pink to St. Mary Mystical Rose Catholic Church in Armada in remembrance of April Millsap. Trees, poles, fences and signs also were adorned with pink ribbons.

Joggers found April’s body July 24 in a drainage ditch along the Macomb Orchard Trail in Armada. The recent middle school graduate disappeared while walking her dog. Investigators continue to hunt for the killer.

She was “somebody’s daughter, somebody’s friend,” Brenda Szalka told the Detroit Free Press.

The Szalka family lives in Armada Township. They didn’t know April, but attended Friday’s funeral.

“On behalf of the community, we are dumbfounded by the violence,” said Ron Szalka, Brenda’s husband.
