Automatic guns available, if you're willing to wait

While John Gruber (Letters, Aug. 1) was correct that it is nearly impossible to determine the status of the firearm used to discharge a particular cartridge, he was incorrect when he stated that “it is illegal to have automatic or machine guns as most people would understand it.”

While select-fire firearms are heavily regulated, most states in the U.S. do allow private citizens to own them.

One must be older than 21, a non-felon, pass a background check conducted by the chief law enforcement officer of the community where the applicant lives, and fingerprinting and federal background check conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

This process is expensive, lengthy and intentionally difficult to negotiate.
