Hatch plays in Michigan's win in Italy

Austin Hatch, the former Canterbury baskeball star who was seriously injured in a 2011 plane crash, got into Michigan’s game Sunday in Rome but scored no points.

Hatch, who committed to Michigan just nine days before the crash that killed his father and stepmother, spent nearly two months in a medically induced coma after the crash. He had to relearn basic life skills such as how to walk and talk.

Hatch, a freshman, played in the final three minutes of Michigan’s 99-60 victory over the Perugia Select Team in the Wolverines’ first game of their Italy tour.

“It was a special moment,” Wolverines coach John Beilein said. “Austin even led us in the fight song after the game was over. It’s something he has worked very hard for. It was a great moment for our team; however, it was truly special for Austin and his grandfather, Jim, who was here in the stands.”
