New uniforms stick to tradition

– Notre Dame revealed its new uniforms Tuesday as part of the team’s media day, and they look a lot like the old ones.

Fans afraid Under Armour would go overboard on the design were relieved to see jersey concepts that varied almost imperceptibly from Notre Dame’s traditional look.

The school signed a 10-year, $90 million contract with apparel giant Under Armour in January.

“When you look for a partner, you want to make sure they’re all in,” Irish coach Brian Kelly said. “In this very short time, they’ve taken the time to look at Notre Dame and our unique qualities and put what we’re representing in our uniforms.”

Bolder, however, was the “Shamrock Series” uniform that the Irish will wear Sept. 13 against Purdue at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The uniform’s blue jersey and blue pants are adorned by various stripes and patterns, and, in an unprecedented move, the gold helmet features an “ND” logo on the side and a navy stripe down the middle.

Quarterback Everett Golson said of the uniform sets, “I like them all.”

Camp battles taking shape

Kelly said the offensive line is almost settled with Ronnie Stanley at left tackle, Matt Hegarty at left guard, Nick Martin at center, Christian Lombard at right guard and Steve Elmer at right tackle.

Sophomore James Onwualu secured an outside linebacker spot, while Amir Carlisle is the kick returner. It’s between Greg Bryant and Cody Riggs to field punts.

Injury updates

Linebacker Jarrett Grace is coming off surgery on his right leg and hasn’t done much in training camp, but Kelly said Grace crossed a “major threshold” by regaining strength in his foot. He could return by the third game.

The Irish have a similar timetable for receiver Torii Hunter Jr. in his recovery from a grade 3 groin strain.
