IU soccer defeats Washington

Femi Hollinger-Janzen has a history of performing well on the pitch at Carroll – he’s scored in the neighborhood of eight goals in nine career games there – and that was on display Saturday night when he had the lone goal in Indiana University’s 1-0 soccer victory over sixth-ranked Washington.

“We had a couple high-school tournaments here and I scored some goals. It’s nice to be close to home, that’s for sure,” said Hollinger-Janzen, who is from Goshen and played for Bethany Christian.

It was the final game of the Shindigz National Soccer Festival – it was supposed to be played at the Fort Wayne Sport Club but was moved because rain ruined the field conditions – and Hollinger-Janzen found the back of the net in the 63rd minute after Tanner Thompson fed him a low pass into the penalty area from the left corner.

“Tanner just played a great ball inside and it was just a little flick in for me,” Hollinger-Janzen said.

After spending the bulk of its existence at Hefner Fields, the Soccer Festival was moved this year to the Fort Wayne Sport Club. After going on without a hitch in the opening day Thursday, rain started wreaking havoc with the field conditions Friday.

All but one of the high-school games Saturday were canceled and the college games were moved to Carroll, where Taylor’s women defeated Indiana Tech 1-0 and Xavier’s men defeated IPFW 1-0.
