Man surrenders quietly after 3-hour standoff

A nearly three-hour standoff with an armed and suicidal man ended Sunday morning with a peaceful surrender, according to Fort Wayne Police.

Officers responded to an apartment in the 900 block of East Cook Road about 5:15 a.m. to a report of a man breaking out the windows of an apartment.

Those officers then heard what sounded like gunshots from inside the apartment, according to police, and it appeared the man was firing out of the windows.

The man eventually told emergency dispatchers he was having suicidal thoughts but refused to leave his apartment to speak with officers.

A Crisis Response Team negotiator reached the man by phone and then coaxed him out of the apartment.

He was detained and taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Apartments nearby were evacuated during the standoff, police said.
