TinCaps take series on Tatis' RBI single

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a game-winning RBI single, and the TinCaps claimed their first series victory of the season on Wednesday.
With a 3-2 win over West Michigan, Fort Wayne took two of three games at Parkview Field. Tatis' heroics came in the eighth inning, where Hudson Potts came around to score with two outs after moving to second base on a wild pitch.
The Whitecaps (6-7) started the ninth with a pair of singles, but left-hander Ben Sheckler capped his two shutout innings by working out of trouble. Austin Athmann hit into a 6-4-3 double play, and Elvis Rubio grounded to first to end the game.
The Whitecaps went ahead 1-0 on Blaise Salter's first-inning sacrifice fly and seized a 2-1 edge in the third on an RBI groundout by Cole Bauml.
Fort Wayne scored in the first on Potts' RBI triple and in the fifth on Reinaldo Ilarraza's RBI single. Ilarraza's slow roller with two outs was fielded by third baseman Anthony Pereira, who threw into the dirt. That prompted West Michigan to lift Kyle Funkhouser, who pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts.
Fort Wayne starter Jesse Scholtens turned in a beauty. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits. The 23-year-old right-hander struck out five.
On Thursday night the TinCaps (5-8) begin a four-game series at Great Lakes.
