Rutgers backup quarterback Zach Allen has major knee injury

The Associated Press

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Rutgers backup quarterback Zach Allen will be sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury.

He injured his anterior cruciate ligament in practice last weekend. The school said Friday that Allen wants his family to be with him when he meets with team doctors to discuss treatment.

Allen completed 1 of 12 passes as a backup last season.

The injury leaves Rutgers with two quarterbacks for Saturday's spring game - incumbent starter Gio Rescigno and walk-on Troy Anthony.

Chris Laviano was the starting quarterback before being replaced by Rescigno. Hayden Rettig transferred after last season. Tylin Oden had a backup role as a true freshman, but he was dismissed from the team this month.
