Flood warnings: Kosciusko, LaGrange, 5 river locations

The National Weather Service has continued its flood warnings for northern Kosciusko and LaGrange counties and for five river points in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.

A flood warning for urban areas and small streams remains in effect for northern Kosciusko and LaGrange counties until 11:45 p.m. tonight, the weather service said. Storm total rainfall of 3 to 6 inches was reported from late Sunday night through late Tuesday night, and many roads remain closed. Locations that will experience flooding include Warsaw, Nappanee and Winona Lake.

The weather service said area rivers to experience moderate flooding include:

  • The Maumee River at Fort Wayne until further notice. At 11 a.m. Thursday the stage was 19.9 feet and rising; flood stage is 17 feet. The river will crest near 20 feet around 7 p.m. tonight. At 20 feet, some evacuations may be necessary in low, unprotected areas of Riverhaven. This crest compares with a crest of 20 feet in June 2015.
  • The St. Joseph River above Newville until further notice. At 11 a.m. Thursday the stage was 15.9 feet and rising; flood stage is 12 feet. The river will crest near 16.8 feet around 7 a.m. Saturday. This crest compares with a crest of 16.3 feet in January 1993.
  • The North Branch Elkhart River at Cosperville until further notice. At 11 a.m. Thursday, the stage was 6.9 feet and steady; flood stage is 6 feet. The river will crest near 7.1 feet around 1 a.m. Friday. At 7 feet, the north end of Lakeview Drive is covered by water, and several houses on Steinberger Lake Drive have water to their foundations. This crest compares to a crest of 7.1 feet in May 2017.
  • The St. Joseph River below Montpelier, Ohio, until further notice. At 8 a.m. Thursday the stage was 15.9 feet and rising; flood stage is 12 feet. At 16.5 feet, floodwaters approach the top of the Montpelier Dikes, with several roads becoming impassible. A crest of 15.5 feet occurred in December 2011.
  • The Tiffin River near Stryker, Ohio, until further notice. At 11 a.m. Thursday the stage was 16.3 feet and rising; flood stage is 11 feet. The river will crest near 16.4 feet around 7 p.m. tonight. This crest compares with a crest of 16 feet in February 2008.
