Fort Wayne Champs in tournament after all

Justin A. Cohn | The Journal Gazette

The Fort Wayne Champs thought they were not going to be in The Basketball Tournament. Now they're back in.

After failing to get enough fan votes to get in, and failing to secure an at-large bid, the Champs received an invitation today because another team dropped out.

The Champs, mostly made up of Mad Ants-affiliated players such as Trey McKinney Jones, Stephan Hicks and Tra-Deon Hollins, will open the single-elimination tournament July 21 at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

The tournament winner gets $2 million.

The Champs reached the 2015 semifinals and participated in 2016 and 2017.

The team that dropped out of the tournament was to be coached by Rajon Rondo, an NBA player.
