IU, Purdue to play twice in basketball

DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette

Purdue and Indiana will meet twice in the upcoming men's basketball season, playing in West Lafayette on Jan. 19 and again in Bloomington on Feb. 19, the Big Ten announced Tuesday.

The conference released full schedules for the men's and women's basketball seasons. Men's basketball teams will play 20 conference games for the first time and women's teams saw their schedules increase to 18 games.

One quirk of the men's schedule specifically is that the expanded conference season will start in November for the first time. Games between Wisconsin and Iowa in Iowa City and Michigan State and Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey, will begin the conference schedule Nov. 30.

All of the men's teams will play two games in November or the first week of December before the greater part of the conference slate starts Jan. 2. The women's schedule opens Dec. 28 with a full slate of six games. Start times and broadcast information for men's and women's schedules will be released at a later date.

The Hoosiers' men's Big Ten schedule opens Dec. 1 with a matchup against Northwestern and continues with a road game against Penn State on Dec. 4. After those two early-season games, Indiana will have four more non-conference games, including matchups against Louisville (on Dec. 8) and Butler (Dec. 15), before returning to Big Ten play Jan. 3 against Illinois.

"Our challenge is to integrate eight guys who have never put on the Indiana uniform with a group who have had a year under their belt and should have a full understanding of what we expect from them as a staff," Indiana coach Archie Miller said in a statement. "We have to establish ourselves as a tough-minded, together group.  We feel as though we have put together a schedule that presents us with great opportunities, but also provides us with tremendous competition."

The toughest stretch of Indiana's Big Ten schedule comes in late January and early February. The Hoosiers play 2017-18 national runner-up Michigan, along with defending conference champion Michigan State and defending conference runner-up Ohio State, all between Jan. 25 and and Feb. 10. Indiana will also have a road matchup against Rutgers and a home date with Iowa during that stretch.

Indiana will play host to Michigan on Jan. 25, Ohio State on Feb. 10 and Michigan State on March 2, in addition to the February home matchup against Purdue. The Hoosiers will have Senior Night on March 10 against Rutgers.

The Boilermakers, who went 15-3 in the conference last season, open their Big Ten slate Dec. 1 when they travel to Crisler Arena to take on Michigan in a rematch of last year's Big Ten Tournament title game. They'll play Maryland at Mackey Arena on Dec. 6 before returning to a non-conference slate that includes December matchups with Notre Dame in Indianapolis and Texas in Austin.

Purdue begins the bulk of its Big Ten schedule with a Jan. 3 home game against Iowa and then faces a tough two-game road trip that will take it to Michigan State and Wisconsin in back-to-back games Jan. 8 and 11. Purdue will close out the regular season with 4 of 6 games on the road, including its trip to Bloomington. The Boilers will have Senior Night on March 2 against Ohio State at Mackey Arena. They'll play Michigan State in West Lafayette on Jan. 27.

Women's Basketball

The Indiana women's basketball team, the defending WNIT champions, will open its season Nov. 11 on the road against Oakland University before returning to Assembly Hall for its home opener against North Florida on Nov. 18.

The Hoosiers, who will be playing for the first time in five years without stars Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill, have just one game each against last year's conference powers, Ohio State and Maryland. Indiana will play the Buckeyes in Columbus on Jan. 10 and will play host to the Terrapins at Assembly Hall on Jan. 27. They'll have Senior Night against Purdue on March 3, which will conclude their Big Ten season.

Purdue, led by sophomore and former Homestead guard Karissa McLaughlin, begins its season in Muncie against Ball State on Nov. 7. The Boilermakers will play a neutral-site game against perennial power Connecticut on Nov. 24 in the Virgin Islands and will start Big Ten play Dec. 28 against defending conference champion Ohio State at home.

The Boilers play host to Indiana at Mackey Arena on Jan. 20 and will have Senior Night against Maryland on Feb. 25.
